When the opposing team’s first batter hits a routine fly ball to the outfield and it’s dropped, you have a suspicion it’s going to be one of those games.

In short, the Cupertino Pioneers gave up eight unearned runs to the Wilcox Chargers in the first two innings, driving their own starter from the mound after 1 2/3. The Chargers, who typically score adequate earned runs on their own, were happy to accept the eight gifted runs, adding the whipped cream and cherry with an earned run in the third.

Matt Kimball had a double for Cupertino.

With the loss, Cupertino finished second in the tournament for the second straight year. Cupertino’s record is now 2-1.

The two teams meet again in late April in a pair of SCVAL De Anza Division games.
