Pioneers Open 2016 With Win Over 76ers

The Cupertino Pioneers opened their 2016 season with a 5-0 win over the Independence 76ers in first round play at the Ted Tamone Tournament on Monday, February 22 at Washington Park in Santa Clara. Cupertino last saw Independence in the first round of the CCS playoffs, where the 76ers sent the Pioneers home with a 2-1 loss.

Senior Dean Rodriguez and Junior Connor Shiomoto each had a pair of singles.

Senior Ben Champion, the 2015 El Camino League MVP, started and went four for Cupertino, striking out 7 and picking up the win. Sophomore Ander Hersh recorded a save.

The Pioneers had 6 hits, including pairs of singles by both Connor Shiomoto and Dean Rodriguez.

With the win, Cupertino advances to the second round and will play on Wednesday, February 24 against the winner of Homestead and Santa Clara.
