Pioneers Take Two from Titans

The Cupertino Pioneers defeated the Gunn Titans twice, 4-1 at Gunn on Tuesday, and 8-7 in extra innings at Cupertino on Thursday.

On Tuesday Cupertino took advantage of opportunities they were presented to build an early 4-0 lead, and defeated Gunn 4-1 on the road at Gunn. Ben Champion went the distance for the win for Cupertino, allowing 1 run on 6 hits.

On Thursday it was Gunn that took advantage of early opportunities, taking a 1-0 lead in the first and adding to it with the help of five unearned runs, then holding it until Cupertino scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. In the top of the seventh the Pioneers came within 1 strike of the win, only to have Gunn tie the game. Cupertino failed to score in the bottom of the inning it was on to extra innings.

Tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Daniel Kono came to the plate with the bases loaded and stroked a hit into wide open spaces in right for an RBI single and a walk-off win for Cupertino.

Kyle Avvakumovits picked up the win in relief, going seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out three.
