Varsity Falls In League Opener at Milpitas

The Cupertino High School varsity baseball team opened league play with a loss Tuesday afternoon at Milpitas. The Pioneers outhit the Trojans 10-7, but in the came up two runs short in a 7-5 loss.

Cupertino jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, as Josh Longabaugh singled and Morgan Saenz homered over the batter’s eye in centerfield. Kyle Avvakumovits followed with a triple and was driven in when Ben Champion singled.

Milpitas put one on the board in the second, 4 in the third to take the lead, and 2 more in the fourth.

The Pioneers came back in the seventh, scoring twice, but fell short leaving the bases loaded.

Cupertino had ten hits on the afternoon, including three singles by Jacob Alexander and the Morgan Saenz monster homer.

With the loss, Cupertino falls to 1-4, 0-1 while Milpitas improves to 4-3, 1-0. Cupertino and Milpitas play again on Thursday at 4:00pm at Cupertino.
