Varsity Downs Miramonte

The Cupertino High School Varsity Baseball Team picked up its first win of the year, coming from behind to defeat Miramonte 6-3 in a non-league game at Cupertino on Saturday.

The scoring started early with Miramonte scoring three times in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, second baseman Daniel Kono singled, and was then driven in when third baseman Josh Longabaugh doubled to make the score 3-1. The run was the first the Pioneers had put on the board since the sixth inning of game one.

Miramonte threatened in the fourth, but Kyle Avvakumovits came on in relief with one out and ended the threat.

The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Ben Champion started things off with a single, followed by Alan Vigent who drew a walk, then a single by Riley Waite, followed by a single by left fielder Anthony Pozzetti which drove in run to make the score 3-2. Daniel Kono followed with a fielder’s choice to drive in a run and tie the game at 3-3. Josh Longabaugh followed with his second double of the day, driving in two to put the Pioneers up 5-3. Morgan Saenz finished the scoring for the day, doubling in the Cupertino’s fifth run of the inning.

Kyle Avvakumovits came out to start the seventh, retiring one, then Josh Longabaugh came on and retired the final two. Avvakumovtis picked up the win, his first of the year, while Longabaugh recorded the save. Ben Champion started, his first as a member of the varsity, and went 4-1/3 for no decision.

Hitting: Josh Longabaugh: 2 doubles, 1 single and 3 RBIs, Morgan Saenz: 1 double and 1 RBI, Anthony Pozzetti: 2 singles and 1 RBI, Ben Champion 2 singles, Daniel Kono: 1 single and 1 RBI.

The win improved Cupertino’s record to 1-3, while evening Miramonte’s at 3-3.
