Cupertino Edges Fremont In Nine

The Cupertino High School Pioneers defeated the Fremont High School Firebirds by a score of 2-1 in nine innings on Tuesday in a SCVAL El Camino Division varsity baseball game at Cupertino.

The Pioneers scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third when Daniel Kono singled in Michael Huyn. The Firebirds tied it up at 1-1 in the fifth. Anthony Pozzetti led of the ninth with a single. Josh Longabaugh drove a ball down the right field line for a single and Pozzetti was waved home, beating the throw and giving Cupertino its second walk off win of the season.

Kyle Avvakumovits came on in relief in the fifth and picked up the win, improving to 4-1.

The Pioneers had to contend with seven innings of southpaw Alex Bernauer on Tuesday. The reportedly Georgetown-bound senior gave up one run in seven innings and struck out five, including four in the second..

With the win, Cupertino improves to 7-10, 5-4.
