The Cupertino Pioneers began the week tied with Monta Vista for second place in the SCVAL El Camino Division, and knowing that if they remained in that position they would win the tie-breaker – by virtue their two wins over Monta Vista -- and get the automatic bid to the CCS Playoffs. Prep2Prep projected the team to be the sixteenth seed in D-I with a first round game against Saint Francis.

On Tuesday though, the team suffered a 6-2 defeat to division champion Los Gatos. The loss thwarted Michael Hyun’s attempt to win his seventh.

Matt Kuhl had a pair of doubles and Kyle Avvakumovits singled twice. Stan Sumibcay and Youseph Pavolic each had a single.

On Thursday, the final day of the regular season, the team found itself one game behind Monta Vista, and needing both a win at Fremont and a Los Gatos win over Monta Vista. It was a hard-fought game that went into the bottom of the seventh tied at 1-1, but Fremont was able to load the bases and get the winning run across on a sacrifice fly. Los Gatos shut out Monta Vista 5-0, so that elusive CCS bid passed heartbreakingly close, but just out of reach.

All seven of Cupertino’s hits were singles. Senior Tony Uribe finished his high school career with three, while fellow senior Matt Kuhl had two. Sophomore Kyle Avvakumovits and Freshman Josh Longabaugh had one each. Sophomore Daniel Kono drove in Cupertino’s only run on a sacrifice fly.
