Pioneers Win Season Opener Over Independence 8-4

The Cupertino Pioneers defeated the Independence 76ers 8-4 in a first round game in the Ted Tamone Memorial Tournament at Washington Park in Santa Clara on Tuesday.  

Senior Riley Waite started and went 3 1/3 innings, Freshman Ben Townsend came on in relief and went 2 2/3, and Senior Morgan Saenz came on to close in the seventh, striking out three in a row, but ultimately having to face five batters as the third batter managed to reach first after striking out.
