Football 2014: Pioneers Over Vikings 28-14

The Cupertino Pioneers defeated the Lynbrook Vikings by a score of 28-14 in a SCVAL El Camino Division contest Friday night at Cupertino.

The game didn’t start well for the Pioneers, when just as in the earlier Frosh-Soph game, Lynbrook recovered an onside kick to start the game. Six plays later Osman Ho ran the ball in for a TD putting the Vikings up 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Cupertino’s special teams continued its struggles by failing to cover the kickoff resulting in yet another Viking possession. But this time the Cupertino defense stiffened and didn’t allow a first down. Cupertino got on the scoreboard later in the first quarter on a six play drive culminating in a 24 yard touchdown pass from Anthony Pozzetti to Kyle Avvakumovits. Later in the second quarter, Lynbrook was marching into Cupertino territory on what appeared to be an impressive drive. But back to back sacks by Dylan Schutz and Morgan Saenz snuffed out this Viking hope forcing a punt. On Cupertino’s next drive, pass completions to Ben Murray and Dylan Schutz set up a two yard touchdown plunge by Anthony Pozzetti, and Marcos Anton’s PAT put the Pioneers up 14-7, a lead they would carry into halftime. But in the second half, Lynbrook tied the score when QB Tony Roberts  hit Jonathan Chang on a short pass who then broke free for a 61 yard TD in the middle of the third period. Cupertino’s next drive with clutch runs by Schutz and CJ Pumphrey. But the drive ended as the aforementioned Jonathan Chang intercepted a Pozzetti pass in the end zone keeping the score tied. However, the tie would be broken on the next CHS drive. The Pioneers all but abandoned the passing game, and went on a ground attack with impressive carries by Jason Frank and Dylan Schutz. The drive would be capped off on the first play of the fourth quarter when Morgan Saenz took a handoff and carried multiple defenders with him all the way into the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown. Cupertino put the game away on their next drive, once again resorting exclusively to the run. Jason Frank took the ball in from 8 yards out making the score 28-14, which is how the game ended.

Coach Oswald commented after the game, “It was good to see our defense making tackles again”, as he praised his defensive unit. Oswald also extolled the play of his offensive line stating, “Our O-Line really did a good job against a defense that can be confusing; they had really good communication. This allowed our 3-headed monster running attack of Jason [Frank], Edison [Hernandez], and CJ [Pumphrey] to run the ball effectively.”  Next week, Cupertino closes the season at home against the Monta Vista Matadors.
