The Los Altos Eagles defeated the Cupertino Pioneers by a score of 44 to 37 in a high scoring contest Saturday afternoon at Los Altos.

Cupertino started out strong with a 60 yard kickoff return by Morgan Saenz to the Los Altos 35 yard line. But Tino’s first drive fizzled and they turned the ball over on downs. But on their next possession, Edison Hernandez broke through the right side of the line and rushed for an 82 yard TD run putting the Pioneers up 7-0. Later in the quarter, Marcos Anton booted a 42 yard field goal making the score 10-0. But Los Altos’ offense awoke on the next possession, with Ben Roach rushing for a 65-yard touchdown making the score 10-7. In the second quarter, Cupertino scored on their first two possessions. Two passes from QB Anthony Pozzetti to RB Dylan Schutz got the Pioneers within striking distance. Then on 2nd and 14 from the Eagle 19, Pozzetti found Kyle Avvakumovits for a TD strike. After Jeremy Ho recovered an Eagle fumble near midfield, The Pioneer offense went to work once more. Once again, it was a pass from Pozzetti to Schutz that got the Pioneers going. And once again it was capped off by a TD pass from Pozzetti to Avvakumovits, this one a 32 yard strike making the score 24-7. But Los Altos scored on their next three possessions. Sean Lanoza scored on a 5 yard TD run with 5:29 left in the half cutting the deficit to 10. After holding Cupertino, Los Altos scored on the first play of their next drive, Sean Lanoza breaking free for another 65 yard TD run, the second 65 yard TD rush of the game for the Eagles. After a muffed kickoff, Los Altos capitalized right away. QB Max Higareda found a wide open Matt Shonher for a 28 yard TD reception --- their third TD in less than 3 minutes. After Schonher’s fourth consecutive made PAT, the score was 28-24. Tino had the ball one last time, but with QB Anthony Pozzetti on the sidelines with an injury, the offense conservatively ran the ball four times, ending the half.

Los Altos got the ball to open the second half, and wasted little time in continuing their touchdown ways. Again it was a long TD run by Sean Lanoza, this time of 50 yards, his third TD of the game. A 2-point conversion by Matt Schonher made the score 36-24. CHS scored on their next drive, with backup QB Nate Zadkovsky’s taking over the reins for the injured Anthony Pozzetti. Cupertino moved the ball well, but ended up settling for another Marcos Anton Field goal from 29 yards out.  On the next Los Altos possession, the Pioneer defense forced a fumble thus giving Tino the ball back on the Los Altos 30. Seven plays later, Morgan Saenz scored on a 3-yard TD run cutting the deficit to two points. The Eagles were stopped on their next possession, and lined up to punt. Their fake punt attempt ended up falling short, and Cupertino took the ball over right near midfield. A few plays later, Cupertino elected to try a very long field goal, and the amazing leg of Marcos Anton validated the decision as he nailed a 43 yard field goal, putting the Pioneers up 37-36. But Los Altos was able to rise to the occasion, and came through with a TD drive to answer. A 30-yard run by QB Max Higareda highlighted a 10 play drive concluding with a 14 yard TD run by Patrick Vargas. Vargas ran in a two point conversion making it a seven point lead with less than a minute remaining. Cupertino made a valiant effort at the end, but Zadkovsky’s last ditch effort came up short as he was tackled just a few yards short of the end zone as time expired.
