Alexis Silva’s 32 yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining gave Cupertino High School a 17-15 come from behind victory on the road at James Lick High School on Friday night.

The game started out with Cupertino scoring on their first drive, highlighted by the first play of the game, a 35 yard strike from Sophomore Anthony Pozzetti to Junior Kyle Avvakumovits. After several running plays by Mitchell Dang, Pozzetti capped off the 8 play 60-yard drive with a 1 yard quarterback plunge for the game’s first score.

On the ensuing possession, a sack, followed by a fumble recovery by Jason McNutt put Cupertino in good position. Tino scored again on a 15 yard wide receiver screen pass to Nathan Duong, putting the Pioneers up 14-0.

James Lick turned it over again on their next possession, this time with an interception by CHS defensive back Alex Ngo.

James Lick had trouble penetrating the tough Pioneer secondary all night, as interceptions by Mitchell Dang, Jacob Alexander, Kyle Avvakumovits thwarted Comet drives.

James Lick did get a touchdown in the second, capitalizing on a CHS fumble, and capping the drive with a two yard TD run by QB Darrick McNary. Lick’s defense tightened, and  a third quarter field goal made the score 14-9 until late in the 4th.

With 4:04 remaining, a tipped pass by Pozzetti was intercepted by Lick's Kevin Baltazar and returned 73 yards for a TD. Then Cupertino fumbled on the first play of the ensuing drive, it looked as though Lick would be able to run out the clock. But Tino’s defense was stout, and CHS ended up getting the ball back with 1:49 left, at their own 15 yard line.

Pozzetti engineered a flawless drive, hitting receiver Michael Hyun a couple of times with big pass completions. With just 20 seconds left, and the ball resting on the James Lick 31 yard line, Pozzetti went back to throw, avoided the rush, and scrambled in Kaepernick-esque fashion to ran to the 15 yard line.

After spiking the ball to stop the clock with 0:11 remaining, Cupertino set up for a 32 yard field goal. Alexis Silva came through with the game winner, and the Cupertino Pioneers escaped with a thrilling 17-15 victory.

The win improves Cupertino's record to 2-0.
