Led by Junior running back and kicker Jonathan Cheng, the Lynbrook Vikings defeated the Cupertino Pioneers 36-34 on Friday night.

The game started in Cupertino’s favor as they scored 14 quick points in the first quarter. After a Kyle Avvakumovits interception put the Pioneers on the Viking 30 yard line, CHS wasted no time with a 30 yard TD strike from Anthony Pozzetti to a sideline-streaking Michael Hyun. On Cupertino’s subsequent possession, the Pioneers scored again, this time on a 3 yard bootleg run by Pozzetti.

But Lynbrook owned the second quarter. QB Jared Jacoby hit WR Max Brogley with a 20-yard touchdown pass. Then, on the first play of their next possession, Jonathan Cheng broke into the open field and went untouched for a 70 yard TD run. After holding Cupertino again, the Vikings engineered an 11-play scoring drive culminating in a 7 yard TD run by Cheng with only 1:09 left in the half put the Vikings up 19-14. CHS’s last drive of the half ended with a fumble, allowing LHS to score a last second field goal, again by Jonathan Cheng, sending the teams to halftime with the Vikings holding a 22-14 lead.

The Vikings received the ball to start the second half, but two sacks pushed them back deep into their own territory, and after a short punt, Cupertino started their first second half possession on the Lynbrook 16 yard line. It took just one play, a 16 yard rush by Mitchell Dang to get the Pioneers into the end zone, and the subsequent two-point conversion on a QB keeper by Pozzetti tied the game at 22. But Lynbrook regained the momentum with another long march. The 65 yard drive was capped off by a 1 yard run by Jason Larsh.

CHS responded, this time on a 17 yard pass from Pozzetti to Hyun to start off the fourth quarter. But a missed extra point kept Lynbrook ahead by one. On their next possession, it was the Jonathan Cheng show once again, as he burned the Pioneers repeatedly for long runs, culminating in a 20 yard TD run, his third touchdown of the night. With 8:08 remaining, Cupertino took the ball at their own 44, and went on an impressive march of their own. On 4th and 6 from their own 8, Pozzetti hit Dylan Schutz with a TD pass. But the two-point conversion failed, and LHS retained a two-point lead. Lynbrook was able to salt away the win by running out the last 4:04 of the clock with a series of first down runs and earned their first league win of the year.
