The Cupertino Pioneers defeated the Overfelt Royals 14-6 in a non-conference game in front of an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd. on Friday night, improving their record to 4-0

The Pioneers defense was the story of this game, as it held the Royals without a single first down in the first half. While the Cupertino offense did not have its best day, they did break through at the very end of the 1st quarter when Jordan McNutt burst through the line and scored from 8 yards out to put Tino on top 7-0.

In the second half, Overfelt did have one successful drive, capped off by an athletic 11-yard across-the-field run by quarterback Kenny Patino making the score 7-6. Overfelt appeared to have gained the momentum when they regained the ball on their next drive inside Pioneer territory. But a key interception by cornerback Alex Ngo turned the tide back in Cupertino’s favor. Key runs by quarterback Anthony Pozzetti and Justin Cheng put the Pioneers into the red zone. On 4th and goal from the 8 yard line, Pozzetti found Kyle Avvakumovits in the back of the end zone for a touchdown that put Cupertino up 14-6. After that, Overfelt never got another first down, as the Pioneer defense thoroughly dominated the game.
Coach Chris Oswald, asked after the game about the keys to victory, discussed the importance of focusing on defensive preparation all week, and how that paid off. “Tonight was the best display of tackling I’ve seen in four years here,” extolling the play of his entire defense, highlighting David Park, Edison Espinoza, Jordan McNutt and Jacob Alexander as having particularly strong games. Oswald also acknowledged the play of running back Mitchell Dang, who led the Pioneers in rushing with 65 yards.

When asked about areas to improve upon, Oswald stated, “We need to improve our offense in the Red Zone. We've been down there some 15 times this year, yet haven’t made the most of our opportunities”.

Cupertino begins its league season next week as it hosts Gunn on Friday night with an opportunity to move their season opening win streak to five.
