Ben Champion and Kyle Avvakumovits combined to allow only one hit and one unearned run as the Cupertino Pioneers defeated the Carlmont Scots 6-1 in a non-league game on Thursday afternoon at Cupertino High School.

Riley Waite drove in Cupertino’s first run of the day with a single in the bottom of the second.  The Pioneers held a 1-0 lead until the Scots scored an unearned run in the fifth.  The game remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Daniel Kono drove in the go-ahead run with a double.  Cupertino added four more that inning to increase their lead to 6-1.

Great defense helped Cupertino hold the potent Carlmont offense to one hit and one unearned run.  Ben Champion started for Cupertino, going five and giving up no hits and no earned runs.  Kyle Avvakumovits pitched two in relief, giving up no runs, on one hit and picking up the win and improving his record to 3-1.
