2013 Was Last Class to Play on Old Field

posted Jul 15, 2013, 2:58 PM by Bill Walstrom   [ updated Jul 6, 2020, 6:01 PM ]

The Class of 2013 was the last group of players to play on the old field prior to its demolition after the 2010 season. 2011 was spent mostly on the road, with a handful of games played at home at end of the season. 2012 marked the first full season on the new field.

On the old field the home dugout was on the third base side. The scoreboard was a classic inningless model located in foul territory in left field. There was no home run fence and center field extended around and behind the redwood trees.

Right-handed hitters had to contend with no home run fence in left and a towering chainlink monster that robbed players of more than a few home runs, though I can recall Hiro Yamamoto crushing one over it that struck the second story roof of the house across the street.

Right field had a 300 foot foul line and a six foot fence. Today's left-handed hitters can can only sigh and contemplate the fun they could have had with that.

A scoring shack was situated in back of the backstop behind home plate and contained a writing surface for the scorer and the hard-wired scoreboard console.  To either side were bleachers which, unlike those today, were large enough to accommodate everyone who wanted to sit.

Five players on the 2013 Cupertino High School Varsity Baseball Team were recognized for their performances in SCVAL El Camino Division play with 2013 All-League Honors.

Seniors Matt Kuhl and Stan Sumibcay were named to the All-El Camino First Team. In 15 league games, Kuhl led the team with 23 hits and a .460 average and collected  15 RBIs.  In 14 league games, Sumibcay had 21 hits, leading the team in doubles with 11, 15 RBIs and a .429 average.

Sophomore Morgan Saenz was named to the All-El Camino Second Team. Saenz had 12 hits in 14 league games, 5 of which were home runs, and astoundingly two of those were grand slams which he hit in consecutive games in week 11. He finished league play with a team high 16 RBIs, and a .286 average.

Senior Tony Uribe and Junior Michael Hyun received All-El-Camino Honorable Mentions.  In 14 league games, Uribe had 16 hits including a team-high 14 singles.  He was third in RBIs with 8 and finished league play with a .364 average.  In 8 league starts, Hyun went 3-3, leading the staff in wins and was the staff workhorse with 29 2/3 innings pitched.

Week 12 In Review

posted May 10, 2013, 9:15 PM by Bill Walstrom   [ updated Jul 6, 2020, 5:31 PM ]

The Cupertino Pioneers began the week tied with Monta Vista for second place in the SCVAL El Camino Division, and knowing that if they remained in that position they would win the tie-breaker – by virtue their two wins over Monta Vista -- and get the automatic bid to the CCS Playoffs. Prep2Prep projected the team to be the sixteenth seed in D-I with a first round game against Saint Francis.

On Tuesday though, the team suffered a 6-2 defeat to division champion Los Gatos. The loss thwarted Michael Hyun’s attempt to win his seventh.

Matt Kuhl had a pair of doubles and Kyle Avvakumovits singled twice. Stan Sumibcay and Youseph Pavolic each had a single.

Los Gatos    1  1  0  0  1  2  1   6 10  0

On Thursday, the final day of the regular season, the team found itself one game behind Monta Vista, and needing both a win at Fremont and a Los Gatos win over Monta Vista. It was a hard-fought game that went into the bottom of the seventh tied at 1-1, but Fremont was able to load the bases and get the winning run across on a sacrifice fly. Los Gatos shut out Monta Vista 5-0, so that elusive CCS bid passed heartbreakingly close, but just out of reach.

All seven of Cupertino’s hits were singles. Senior Tony Uribe finished his high school career with three, while fellow senior Matt Kuhl had two. Sophomore Kyle Avvakumovits and Freshman Josh Longabaugh had one each. Sophomore Daniel Kono drove in Cupertino’s only run on a sacrifice fly.

             1  2  3  4  5  6  7   R  H  E
Cupertino    0  1  0  0  0  0  0   1  7  1
Fremont      1  0  0  0  0  0  1   2  8  0

The Pioneers finished the season with an overall record of 13-14, and a league finish of 7-8.

Morgan Saenz received some recognition for his stellar offensive performance last week topping Prep2Prep's week 11 Baseball Honor Roll as their Top of the Class.
